Laura Chinchilla, the eldest of four children, was born in a suburb of the Costa Rican capital, San José. Her middle-class Roman Catholic family had a legacy of involvement in national politics: her father, Rafael Ángel Chinchilla, twice served as the country’s comptroller general in the 1970s and ’80s. Chinchilla earned a bachelor’s degree in political science (1981) from the University of Costa Rica and a master’s degree in public policy (1989) from Georgetown University.  more
