MKTG 344 (Sahni) Survey Guide

Instructions for students of Marketing Research MKTG 344 on how to build Qualtrics surveys and prep them for data collection.

Advanced Qualtrics Functions (Optional)

Now that you have built a basic survey and have identified your target population, you may want to hone your survey a bit further. This section includes videos of slightly more advanced Qualtrics techniques. These may or may not be useful to your specific application. Implementing these techniques is not required to have an effective survey.

Using any of these functions is entirely OPTIONAL and NOT REQUIRED.

Advanced Functions

Measure time in the background

  • If it is important to you to know how long a participant stays on a page, you can set a timer that counts the number of seconds they are on the page before clicking to the next page.

Question behavior, skip logic, recode values

  • If you want options or other questions to show up or be hidden depending on the answers to previous questions.

Simple Display logic

  • Allows you to show hidden questions based on answers to other questions. This is helpful if you want to ask additional questions of some participants that answer questions one way versus another.

Simple Skip logic

  • This allows you to skip ahead to other questions based on answers to an earlier question. Similar to Display Logic.

Survey flow - Advanced: Blocks & Block behavior

Below are various related functions that have to do with blocks within survey flow - things like randomization, conditions, and skip logic.

  • You can randomize entire sets of blocks if that is important to you.

  • If your participants will be split into different experimental groups (conditions), or if you want to split your participants into different batches that see completely different sets of questions.

  • Doing skip logic within the Survey Flow view rather than within the Survey Builder view.

  • Survey flow, moving blocks, block randomization, end of survey message
  • You can also randomize these conditions using branch logic.

Recode values

  • You can change the numbers assigned to the answers of each question however you see fit. (e.g., change “1, 2, 3” to “0, 1, 2”)
  • Sometimes you need to download your data with the numbers that correspond to the answers. (e.g., a “5” instead of “somewhat agree”) When you add answer options to a question, Qualtrics will assign a number to the answers (8, 9, 10, …). However, if you make and delete a number of answer responses for a single question, Qualtrics’ numbering scheme can get messed up and the answers will no longer have a consecutive numbering scheme (1, 2, 3, etc.) and instead be jumbled (3, 8, 13, 11, etc.). This can make things confusing when you download your data in numeric format.
