New Resource: MSCI ESG Data

by Alice Kalinowski on 2024-11-14T08:53:00-08:00 | 0 Comments

We now have access to over 1,500 ESG (environmental, social, and governance) metrics and scores for issuers worldwide from MSCI. The dataset contains monthly data covering 1999-present (data coverage increases over time).

  • MSCI’s proprietary company-level ESG metrics and scores are used to assess a company’s exposure to and management of ESG risks and opportunities.
  • MSCI uses a variety of standardized data (e.g. CO2 emission intensity) to calculate “Key Issue” scores (e.g. “Carbon Emissions”), which are rolled up into “Theme” scores (e.g. “Climate Change”), which are used to calculate overall ESG scores.
  • The scores are industry-relative (different environmental and social metrics are used to assess different companies depending on the in which they operate) and all companies are assessed on all governance issues.
  • MSCI ESG Ratings were previously known as "MSCI Intangible Value Assessment (IVA) Ratings."

This data is available in Redivis for current Stanford faculty, research staff, and PhD students for Stanford-related academic research purposes.
